April 20, Kyiv: Projects “Every Drop Matters” and Municipal Governance and Sustainable Development Programme  of United Nations Development Programme present 11-minute video, which draws attention to rational attitude to water resources of the planet. The video was produced in context of the joint Project of UNDP and Coca-Cola company in Ukraine “Every Drop Matters”.

UNDP in Ukraine and Coca-Cola company under support of TM “BonAqua” jointly implement the Project “Every Drop Matters” in order to support: a) rehabilitation and protection of natural water springs; b) facilitate self-organisation through joint actions; c) raise awareness among youth on rational attitude to water resources;

In 2011-2012 the Project “Every Drop Matters” was implemented in partner municipalities by UNDP Project “Municipal Governance and Sustainable Development Programme”. In 2011 the Project supported implementation of 6 community projects for rehabilitation of natural water springs in 5 partner municipalities – Ivano-Frankivsk, Novograd-Volynskiy (Zhytomyr Region), Rivne, Tulchyn (Vinnytsia Region).

The trainings on rational water usage was held in context of the project in order to raise socially responsible behaviour of the youth to environment and personal responsibility for nature and water resources. Also, local communities rehabilitated the water springs with their own efforts.

Project implementation experience revealed that it is necessary to draw attention of wide public to problem of limited water resources.

A citizen of Ukrainian city on average uses from three hundred to three hundred and thirty litres of water per day.  Out of which 60 litres is used  for washing the dishes, at least sixty more litres  for taking a shower, forty five litres – for laundry and  fifteen litres for cooking. The same amount flows out through loosely closed taps, leaking sinks, showers, taps and toilets.

However, everyone can treat this natural treasure rationally. If you half the time, spent in a shower, the water consumption of a family will reduce to 90 litres per day. If you close a tap whilst brushing your teeth, you will save up to 15 litres of water per day. Another way to rationally save water is to wash the dishes in a water-filled sink or in a dishwasher using environmentally friendly household cleaning products.

The key message of the video is that water resources in Ukraine and the world are limited and need rational attitude. Each person can contribute to preserving water resources. The communities can rehabilitate natural water springs and provide water to thousands of local residents.

The shooting of the video was done in Rivne municipality during the training for the teachers and construction works for spring rehabilitation and in Novograd-Volynskiy during the training for schoolchildren. Also, the video contains and interview with Ricarda Rieger, UNDP Country Director in Ukraine and Olesya Zhylynska, Media Director of Coca-Cola LTD and representatives of local communities. The video was produced by TTB Studio.
