On 6th October, the representatives of the Credit Union “Stanislavska”, Ukrainian-Canadian Business Centre, officials from Ivano-Frankivsk Municipality, Municipal Support Unit and UNDP/MGSDP launched a new experiment on employment development in Ivano-Frankivsk by signing Memorandums of Agreements. The proposal called “Promoting Employment through Networking of Small Businesses and Related Entities in Ivano-Frankivsk Municipality” was developed to support local stakeholders in their efforts to promote employment and small and media enterprises in the territory.

In the framework of the proposal, 80 unemployed people will receive trainings on business development, write their business plans and will be supported by a credit union to receive group credits by the end of 2006. Local stakeholders, like Credit Union “Stanislavska”, Ukrainian-Canadian Business Centre, Ivano-Frankivsk Municipality, Municipal Support Unit and Ivano-Frankivsk Municipal Employment Centre joined their efforts and created Business Promotion Centre to support beginners to start their own business.

In a brief meeting, the representatives of UCBC and credit union signed MoAs in front of the participants of the business plan preparation training supported by UNDP/MGSDP. The first batch of the training presented their ‘business plans’ which were keenly observed by the forthcoming (2nd batch) candidates and appreciated by the representative of credit union.

J. Sah, UNDP/MGSDP International Project Manager presented on (a) Developing Entrepreneur Organisation, (b) Establishing a System of Micro-saving, and (c) Establishing a System of Micro-credit. It is envisaged the participants will form their self-support groups, collect micro-savings, deposit them in the Credit Union and will receive small credits based on social collateral.

At the end of the session the dialogue about alternative mechanism on micro-saving and micro-credit to promote employment and small business development in Ivano-Frankivsk between participants of the training and representatives of UNDP/MGSDP, Credit Union and Ukrainian-Canadian Business Centre took place. “I didn’t believe banks; my previous experience on bank credit was very painful. I almost lost my apartment. That’s why when I heard on group micro-credit, I was skeptical. But after clear explanations of the idea, presented by representatives of Business Promotion Centre and UNDP/MGSDP, I realized that credit could be real for me. Moreover, I would find new friends and partners”, one of the participants of the training shared her impressions.
