Rivne, February 7th: In cooperation of the UNDP-led projects “Consumer Society and Citizens Network (CSSN)” and “Municipal Governance and Sustainable Development Programme (MGSDP)”, series of trainings was planned for municipalities of Ukraine to raise the consumers’ awareness on their rights and mechanisms of their protection. The first training of this kind was held in Rivne in participation of 35 representatives of local authorities, NGOs and media.
“The subject of educating confident consumers and building up the practices of their rights’ protection is very timely and vital for Ukraine. It is in line with the signed agreement between Ukraine and the World Trade Organisation, which revealed great opportunities for the country but also became its serious responsibility for the consumer market, quality of goods and services available on it and mechanisms of consumer rights’ protection”, said Ihor TYMOSHENKO, Head of the Main Directorate of Economy of Rivne Region State Administration opening the seminar-training.
During this training, its participants learned general information about the basic principles and mechanisms of consumer rights’ protection in Ukraine and European Union, discussed the benefits of independent comparative testing, gained knowledge about the opportunities of support from CSSN project for consumer awareness, education and information campaigns. The trainers – Ms. Klavdia MAKSYMENKO, CSSN Project Manager, and Mr. Denys POLTAVETS, CSSN Senior Expert, – answered the questions from the audience, provided them recent publications on the subject, and invited all interested stakeholders for further cooperation.
“Each of us is a consumer. Therefore, this subject relates to everyone. We as the Regional Department of Consumer Rights’ Protection are responsible for this activity at regional level. Over 99% of the check-ups of entrepreneurs and business companies we conduct on the subject of observing the consumer rights reveal inappropriateness and violations of current legislation. Therefore, in order to be able to save themselves from poor quality goods and services, the consumers have to know their rights and be ready to competently protect them”, said Evgeniya MOSIYUK, Head of the Regional Department of Consumer Rights’ Protection.
These kind of trainings were also planned to be conducted later this year for the benefit of such partner municipalities of MGSDP as Novohrad-Volynskiy (Zhytomyr region), Kirovske (Donetsk region), Rubizhne (Luhansk region), Voznesensk, Mykolayiv (Mykolayiv region), Hola Prystan’ (Kherson region), and Lviv.
